I’m eating Doughnuts, Be Right Bake (BRB)

We had the privilege of sitting down with David the owner of Be Right Bake, a fellow Croydonian operating out of South Croydon.

Be Right Bake offer fresh brioche style doughnuts that are rich in flavour and light in texture.

Tell us how this got started?

I was a little bored and needed a creative outlet. I used to be an electrician but retrained as a Chef because I’ve always had an interest in food; I wanted to follow my passion.

I went travelling to Australia and Bali and noticed a doughnut trend. My mate was sending me photos on Instagram  and one picture caught my eye. Since I already have experience with doughnuts, all I needed was one event to try it out. My friend Nathan was having a party so I decided to take some doughnuts along.

People went crazy over the doughnuts that I brought. That same weekend we started an Instagram page and that was when Be Right Bake (BRB)  was born.

We’ve been running since March 2017.

Most popular Doughnuts?

Oreo is a firm favourite. Also Nutella Fudge, Kinder Bueno and Crunchie. The way I like to work is that I provide customers with a menu which they can find on the website but any flavour you want we can do. For example, we recently did popping candy doughnuts, custard creams and digestive biscuits. It’s all about providing a unique experience for people.

I always ask people what is their favourite sweet or favourite chocolate and we take it from there. I encourage people to look on the instagram page for inspiration and to get as creative as they can. It’s always good to try something new.

We’ve seen customers injecting stuff into their doughnuts. Tell us about the syringes?

Really it is just from Instagram. I thought I’d just try it. Customers just inject the contents of the syringes into the doughnut.

At the moment we have strawberry, chocolate hazelnut, toffee butterscotch – tastes just like the sweet Werthers Originals. We also have vanilla custard, sour apple and Baileys custard. Everyone loves Baileys custard. We’re working on new flavours so if you have any ideas let us know!

Any plans for a shop or permanent space?

We’d love to have a shop eventually but for now we are focused on home deliveries. We’re in the process of trying to secure a market stall somewhere in South London so watch this space.

What’s next?

When I first started I wanted to have a bakery company as I also make brownies. I look at the doughnuts now compared to when I first started, they’ve improved massively. I think bespoke doughtnuts will be the new cup cakes so I’m just focused on keeping the quality high and getting as many people as possible to try the doughnut. My face is on the brand so I want it to represent quality.

As well as home deliveries we are also open to doing baby showers, weddings and engagement parties.

What makes a good doughnut?

It has to be very light and not dry. The doughnuts have to be freshly made. All our doughnuts are made and delivered on the day. If I have a big order I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and bake all the way past sunset. I can make about 350 doughnuts in a day.

How many calories in a donught?

I get asked that a lot. I’ll get back to you on that.

Funnily enough we get a lot of body builders eating these doughnuts. You can inject protein into the doughnuts or make protein dougnuts. There is a gym called Kings Gym in Croydon, I’m regularly dropping off boxes there.

They are great for cheat days. I’m also starting to get a lot of requests for vegan doughtnuts.

Where do you like to eat in Croydon?

I love to eat in the Dutchie in Croydon. That’s my favourite place and you can catch me in there quite often. Boxpark is quite cool too as there is so much choice there.

Be Right Bake make donughts as well as brownies. All prices can be found on their website. Doughnuts can be delivered across London. Check them out @ www.berightbake.com

They currently deliver on Saturdays and Sundays.
