Once upon a Cheesecake is definitely a fairytale come true. When we stumbled across this local Croydon business, we just had to reach out to find out more about how it all began and what’s in store for us in the future.
They had us at the cheesecake jars but this is just the very beginning as we caught up with Keisha, founder of Once upon a Cheesecake to tell us more about what they do.
If you’re a fan of cheesecake then this blog has your name on it. Read on!
What inspired you to start Once upon a Cheesecake?
I was pregnant with my first child and craved cheesecake so much we nick-named the baby “cheesecake” while I was pregnant. The shop cheesecake tasted awful so I looked up a recipe and baked my own, then this became a hobby of mine and I started to experiment with different flavour combinations as well as adding in different ingredients. I took these cheesecakes to family gatherings and was told that I need to sell them even though at the time the presentation wasn’t that great, the taste was always on point. I then considered this idea years later and here we are!
How would you describe the perfect cheesecake in just 3 words?
An edible story
We spotted those quirky cheesecake jars, how was this idea born?
We initially thought of a dessert called the cheesecake mess because for me a food experience is one that can incorporate different textures and make them work beautifully together.
The idea was to incorporate all elements of a cheesecake and putting them into a jar to give a different experience for eating a cheesecake. This was launched in Croydon over Christmas 2017 and was successful as many customers brought them to give them as gifts to their loved ones.
Tell us more about the different flavour cheesecakes you offer?
Our flavours vary, we really do believe that any flavour combined with the right one can become a “flavour in matrimony.” Someone said to me recently “I have never seen you do a strawberry cheesecake” and I said “I can but we tend to always feel the need to add a twist because we are big on stories and what’s a plot without a twist!” Our flavours in matrimony include:
- White chcolate and strawberry
- Chocolate with a salted caramlised hazelnuts
- Strawberry and rosewater
- Baileys banoffee (yes baileys liquor with banoffee- it’s a treat)
- Lemon and coconut
- Apple crumble
- the list goes on..
What are your top sellers?
- Oreo and white chocolate
- Salted caramel
Can you give us an tips or tricks in making a delicious cheesecake?
A cheesecake is a custard at heart so if not made with love and care it will crack crumble and give humpty dumpty a run for his money! Follow the recipe with care and patience.
We see that you provide cheesecakes for all sorts of occasions – birthdays, Christmas etc.. How can people get in touch and make an order?
Who out there there could in the cheesecake game or completely unrelated, is inspiring your business right now on Instagram?
James Averdieck – founder of gü desserts inspires me.
I remember watching or reading (can’t remember which) an interview of his where he was asked by someone what he does for a living, this was prior to even starting his venture with Gü and he replied with words to the effect of “I am just waiting to close a deal with a major retailer on a dessert company that I own” even though he had not yet been in talks with the retailer. He inspired me because by doing that he not only set himself a goal to achieve but he spoke his product and brand into existence. I also think he is a very down to earth and a hard working individual, although he sold gu, he went on to create another brand.
Absolutely inspired by Mo the comedian not only because laughing is my favourite pastime of them all but because of his tenacity and grabbing hold of opportunities. I am in awe with the way that his career has taken a sudden leap in such a short space of time. I love that he is doing something he is good at and that he manages to bring people from all walks of life together to have a good old laugh. All in all he was working a 9to 5 just a year before his comedy started to captivate an audience and it just reaffirms to me that all you need is one moment and it can change your whole life and really give you a platform to do what you were born to do.
What’s your favourite type of cheesecake and why?
That’s a difficult question but if I had to choose I would say Cheesecake in a jar because of sheer convenience! I personally can eat some cheesecake and then put a lid on it and pop it back in the fridge to enjoy the rest later or in a few minutes!
